Pilgrimage Church of Wies, Bavaria, Germany (UNESCO)
Everything started in 1738 when people saw tears coming from the eyes of a dilapidated statue of the Scourged Saviour. When the word spread, there was a rush to this place of people who were hoping for a help and relief. Not long after the Church declared the weeping statue a true miracle. The small chapel which was built in 1740 to accomodate the statue soon turned out to be way too small for the masses of pilgrims. So a new church was designed and finally built between 1745 and 1754, the inside richly decorated with paintings and fescoes while from the outside it looked quite simple.
Many people claim to have seen pilgrims being cured from their diseases. As a result the Pilgrimage Church of Wies became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe.
In 1983 the church was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Thank you very much Birgit Brettschneider for sending this amazing evening view !!!
