The real beauty is the raw nature of the rugged, barren landscape.

The lighthouse, located on a rock 165 meters (541 ft) above the sea started operating in 1772 and is currently the second oldest in Portugal.

In its vicinity, there is the monument, marking this spot as the most western of Europe, with an inscription in rememberance of Louis de Camoes, the country's most renowned poet:

"Where the earth ends and the sea begins. Today it is often knicknamed Main Street of America or Mother Road. It was established on 11th November, 1926 and became the most important east-west connection of the country in the years between 1930 and 1960. Because of the ever growing number of vehicles, the single lane, often winding track was no longer sufficient and was replaced by bigger, more modern highways. It still continous to attract tourists from all over the world looking for adventure, nostalgia and magic that has inspired lots of films, songs and shows.

Thank you so much Sheri, for this beautiful addition to one of my favourite postcards collections !!!
Sabinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16910020001199989667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5173351821130466115.post-63093594696032627902023-01-07T13:09:00.004+01:002023-01-07T13:38:18.797+01:00Rabsztyn Castle, Poland

What an awesome sunset view of Rabsztyn (Raven's Rock) Castle in Poland. Legend says that a visiting farmer, who was falsely accused of stealing and sentenced to death by hanging, was saved by the rooster. The full legend can be found on the cross in the ruins of the palace of the dukes of Braganza, which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1755.

Barcelos is known for excellent pottery work. It was commissioned by Nicholas Fouquet, an extremely ambitious young man and member of the Parliament of Paris. He later became superintendant of finances at the court of Louis XIV. Construction lasted until 1661. It was inaugurated in August that same year in the presence of his majesty the king. Probably not a really good idea, as the king got jealous and had Nicolas Fouquet arrested soon after this lavish festivity and sentenced him to lifelong imprisonment. His wife was sent into exile. Louis XIV put Vaux-Le-Vicomte under sequestration and sold many of the expensive pieces of art Fouquet had gathered in his splendid home. Then he set the team of architects who built and designed Vaux-Le-Vicomte on the task of building an ever bigger and more splendid palace that would outshine the one of his former minister of finances ... It is located in the Alps of Ammergau, near the city of Füssen, nestled in the mountains with spectacular views to the Alps and down to the town of Schwangau.

It was commissioned by Bavarian King Ludwig II. He was a great admirer of the works of German composer Richard Wagner. To him the king wrote the following words:

"It is my intention to rebuild the old castle ruin of Hohenschwangau near the Pöllat Gorge in the authentic style of the old German Knight's castles, and I must co9nfess to you that I am looking forward very much to living there one day (in 3 years); tghere will be several cosy, habitable guest rooms with a splendid view of the noble Säuling, the mountains of Tyrol and far across the plain; you know the revered guest I would like to accommodate there; the location is one of the most beautiful to be found, holy and unapproachable, a worthy temple for the divine friend who has brought salvation and true blessing to the world. It will also remind you of "Tannhäuser" (Singers' Hall with a view of the castle in the background), "Lohengrin" (castle courtyard, open corridor, path to the chapel); this castle will be in every way more beautiful and habitable than Hohenschwangau further down, which is desecrated every year by the prose of my mother; they will take revenge, the desecrated gods, and come to live with Us on the lofty heights, breathing the air of heaven."

The gateway was the first section to be completed, after the foundation stone was laid on September 5, 1869 and the king lived there for a few years. Construction of the main parts of Neuschwanstein took longer than expected and were far more expensive, driving the king into bankruptcy. He then applied to the government, asking for financial support. The government instead, opted for deposing the king. The second attempt to bring him into custody worked, after the first one failed when Ludwig was able to get the gendarmeries and brigades of the surrounding villages and towns to protect him. The night after he was taken from the castle, King Ludwig and his assigned supervisor, his neurologist, died unter mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg.

The castle was eventually finished, but with simpler designs and the plans for extensive gardens with terraces and fountains were abandoned. The king had never planned for the castle to ever be opened to the public, but soon after completion, the goevbernment decided otherwise.
