A city view of Maastricht in Belgium sent by myself in September 2014. Due to the Maastricht Treaty this city is known as the birthplace of the European Union.

Maastricht, Belgium

This postcard I sent myself when visiting Maastricht, Belgium. It shows the "Twin Churches" Saint John and Saint Servatius.  On the left,  with a distinctive red limestone tower, is Saint John's Church , the main protestant church of the city. The romanesque Basilica of Saint Servations is a place of pilgrimmage as the remains of the Saint are entomed in the crypt.
The city has 1677 buildings and monuments under protection as national heritage sites.

Tongeren, Belgium

This card I received from Gerda Theunis for the WiP Extremes Swap. It shows Tongeren in Belgium, the country's oldest city. It was founded in 15 BC and named Aduatuca Tungorum by the Romans. Before the Romans the area was inhabited by the Eburones. Under the influence of Saint Servatius, Bishop of Tongeren, the city became the center of a Christian diocese.

Het Steen, Antwerp, Belgium

The medieval fortrees Het Steen in the center of the old town of Antwerp, is the city's oldest building. It was built against the Viking incursions in the early middle ages. From 1303 till 1827 it was in use as a prison and then became the Museum of Archeology in 1980.

Begijnhof, Aarschot, Belgium (UNESCO)

Aarschot is a city in Flanders, Belgium. On the card is the tower of the Church of our Lady, but even more important the Béguinage of Aarschot which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Flemish Béguinage, inscribed into the list in 1998

Beguinage of Diest, Belgium (UNESCO)

This great postcard came from Gerda for the WiP November General Swap. It shows the Belgium UNESCO World Heritage Site The Beguinage of Diest. The Béguines were a Roman Catholic Sisterhood in the 13th and 14th centuries, consisting of women who devoted their life to prayer and good works but did not take any vows. Thus they were not nuns and could return to a worldly life whenever they chose to do so.

Plantin-Moretus Museum, Antwerp, Belgium

A wonderful view of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, Belgium was sent to be my Gerda for the WiP UNESCO Swap. It is a new site in my UNESCO Collection, so I was really thrilled to get this one :)

Castle of the Dukes of Brabant, Turnhout, Belgium - June 2, 2010

This wonderful card I received from Gerda today. It shows the castle of the Dukes of Brabant in Turnhout. It was built in the 12th century and used to be a hunting lodge, now it serves as a law court. Thanks Gerda for this fantastic card for the WiP Castle Swap!

Tremelo, Belgium - May 20, 2010

Tania sent me this nice multiview from Tremelo in Belgium. I met Tania on Facebook and this postcard is part of a private swap we agreed upon :)

Wikipedia says: Tremelo is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant in Flanders. Tremelo is most famous for having been the hometown of Father Damien, who Pope Benedict XVI canonized on October 11, 2009 as Saint Damien of Molokai. Father Damien is locally known as Pater Damiaan, and was a legendary martyr of charity who had tended to the lepers in the Hawaiian Islands.
