Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard, also known as Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen, belongs to the Norwegian kingdom and is Europe's most northern landscape as well as the most northern populated region of the world. The archipelago is located in the Arctic Ocean. Only Spitsbergen Island is populated, with Longyearbyen being the largest settlement and capital city. All other islands can only be visited with special permission.

Approximately 60% of the archipelago are covered with glaciers, an ideal breeding ground for many seabirds and home to polar bears, Arctic fox and reindeer as well as several species of marine mammals.

This card was sent by Gelinda from the world's northern most Postcrossing Meeting. While I do hate Winter, cold temperatures and snow with a passion, attending this meeting must have been a dream.

Arctic Circle Centre, Norway

This postcard shows the Arctic Circle Centre in Norway. The Arctic Circle is northernmost circle of latitude. It marks the area where for at least one day per year, the sun won't set (June 2) or rise (December 21). From this point the continuous day or night increases until you reach North Pole with 6 months per year in daylight followed by a 6 months long period of darkness.

Geirangerfjord, Norway (UNESCO)

This is one of the places that are still on my "Must See" list. Geirangerfjord in Norway is one of the countries most visited tourist sites. The 15 km long fjord is surrounded by some of the steepest mountains of the entire west coast, which leaves very little room for settlements. At the end of the fjord there is the small town Geiranger.

In 2005 Geirangerfjord was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Naroyfjord.

Geirangerfjord, Norway (UNESCO)

One of the places that are very high on my "Must See List", Geirangerfjord in Norway. It is one of the country's most visited places and a UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 2005. The steep mountains surrounding it, leave no room for human settlements on the shores. At the end of the fjord lies the small village of Geiranger, eponym of the fjord.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway

Great addition for my Royalty collection, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway. He is the second child of King Olaf and Queen Sonia. At the time his father ascended the throne the Norwegian law still was in favour of the eldest male child as successor. In 1990 the law was changed, so that now the firstborn child will inherit the throne, regardless of gender.

Lofoten Stockfish Museum, Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten Stockfish Museum provides an insight into the production of Norways oldest export commodityy, stockfish, which was used in foreign trade as early as in the 800s. The museum also shows how work at a conventional fish landing station is carried out.

This breathtaking postcard of Lofoten in Norway was sent by my parents from their cruise to Scandinavia.
Lofoten is an archipelago in Nordland, Norway, known for a truly awesome landscape with mountains, peaks, beautiful sheltered bays and untouched lands.

Trollstigen, Norway

This beautiful multiview was sent by my parents from their Scandinavian cruise.  It shows images of Trollstigen, a tourist attraction in Norway. It is part of the Norwegian national road 63 and became famous due to 11 breathtaking hairpin bends at the steep mountainside.

Flamsdalen, Norway

Flamsdalen is the valley of river Flamsselvi in Norway, about 18 km long. This beautiful postcard was sent by my parents Christel and Reinhold Meid from their Scandinavian cruise.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen is located on the Bergen peninsula. The city was founded  1070 AD. The remains of the quays are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

North Cape, Norway

This postcard shows the North Cape, which is often mistakenly called the northermost point of Europe. It was sent by my parents from their cruise to Scandinavia

Stryn, Norway

My parents sent me this stunning postcard from their cruise last year to the North Cape. It shows the town of Stryn in Nordfjord district, Norway. The town is well known for its all year glacier skiing and is located at the Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, a national tourist route.

SS Sörlandet, Norway

A great addition to my ship collection. The SS Sörlandet is one of the 3 Norwegian Tall Ships and also the oldest full rigged tall ship of the world still in operation.

Undredal, Norway

Undredal is a popular tourist destination and is located at the Aurlandsfjord. Until 1988 it could only be reached by boat. There are only about 100 inhabitants and about 500 goats. The village is famous for the brown goat cheese which is still traditionally made. It also has the smallest stave church in Northern Europe.
This nice card was given to me by Ursula Schwarz who received it from friends.

Roros, Norway (UNESCO)

In 1980 Roros in Norway was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage list. The city is one of the most significant places for copper mining in the 17th century. Mining activity lasted 333 years until 1977 it was stopped completely.

This card came from Tone Fjosne for the WiP July General Swap. It shows Homborsund with the Homborsund Lighthouse in the background.

Trollstigen, Norway

The Trollstigen is a serpentine mountain road in Rauma, Norway and a major tourist attraction. It has 11 hairpin bends and an incline of 9%. It was opened in July 1936 by King Haakon VII. The road is closed in autumn and winter.

The beautiful city of Trondheim ended up in my mailbox for the WiP Multiview swap and was sent by Tone Fjosne. The city was founded as a trading post in 997 and was the capital of Norway during the Viking age. Today it is the 3rd biggest city of the country.
