Fraser Island, Australia (UNESCO)

After a long time, here is another Australia Postcard. This one showing views of UNESCO Site Fraser Island, an island on the South Eastern coast of Queensland. It was formerly the home of the Butchulla tribe and counts as the largest sand island in the world.

Cape Byron Light, New South Wales, Australia

Absolutely beautiful view of Cape Byron Light in New South Wales. It is situated on the most Easterly point of mainland Australia and a popular tourist attraction. It was built in 1901 together with cottages for the light-keepers and is listed on the National Estate Register.

Mt. Elder, Macquarie Island, Australia (UNESCO)

Stunning surprise coming from Rod Eime :)  A beautiful view of Mr. Elder as seen from the Macquarie Island Research Station with a special rubber stamp on the back.
The island was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, mainly for its unique geological features.

The A66-1 Avro Lancaster was called Queenie and flew as a trainer mainly until scrapped in 1996.

Prince Giolo

As always an extraordinary postcard from Rod Eime. This time it shows an engraving by John Savage of Prince Giolo. He was the son of  the chief of the island of Moangis, which is located near the Philippine island of Mindanao.

Historic Tram, Glenelg, South Australia

A surprise card received from Tom Hoey,. showing the historic tram that links Glenelg with Adelaide. Glenelg, with its great beaches has become a popular tourist destination with nice hotels and restaurants.  The historic tram is in use during the weekends while on the other days service was taken over by more modern trams.

Loxton, Australia

Loxton is a small town in Riverland, South Australia, on the south bank of River Murray. The area around Loxton is an important area for summer fruit and citrus fruit.

Macquarie Lighthouse, Sydney, Australia

Macquarie Lighthouse  is  the first and longest serving lighthouse site in Australia. There was a navigational aid close by to the current lighthouse since 1791.  The first lighthouse was built in 1818. The current one, which is still fully operational and in service was built in 1883.

Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Australia

Such fascinating animals!  Eastern Grey Kangaroos, also known as Forester Kangaroos are found in Southern and Eastern Australia.

Tasman Bridge, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

The Tasman Bridge, with a total length of 1,395 meters, crosses the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania. Construction began in May 1960, replacing the old bridge that became too small for the increasing traffic. It was finally finished in December 1964 and officially opened by HRH the Duke of Gloucester on March 18, 1965.

Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road, Australia

Great postcard sent by Alison Bailey for the Wip Natural Wonders Swap.
It shows the rock formation called 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road.  Starting at Torquay, it runs 243 kilometers along the coast to Allansford. It was built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932. It is dedicated to casualties of World War I and is the World's largest war memorial.

Phillip Law, Australia

Phillip Law was an Australian explorer and scientist and the director of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions from 1949 til 1966. He was born in April 1912 in Tallangatta, Victoria. In February 2010 he passed away at the age of 97.

Spire of the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne, Australia

The Victorian Arts centre was designed by Sir Roy Grounds. Construction began in 1973 The Centre opened in two stages. Hamer Hall opened in 1982 while the Theatres Building did not open until 1984.

Great card sent by Tom Hoey. It shows a beach on Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. It is Queensland's largest island and considered the largest sand island in the world.
