During World War II it was taken over by the German military service. Inmates and forces labourers of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp had to construct a massive underground complex of about 3.200 square meters, presumably a future headquarter and abode for Hitler. But this is not confirmed.
In 1945 the Red Army moved in. During reconstruction several structures were destroyed, numerous artefects stolen.
After the war, the castle became a cultural centre and recreation home.
Nowadays, the castle is open to the public, with exception of most of the underground complex, attracting over 300,000 visitors per year. Another major attraction is the annual Festival of Flowers and Art.
Thank you very much for sending this great card with so many beautiful stamps Monika !!!
