Heidelberg Castle, Germany

Heidelberg is probably one of the most famous German cities. It attracts over one million visitors from all over the world each year. I remember vividly walking the streets of this great place, sitting in one of the many outdoor cafés, eyes closed, just listening to the sounds and voices all around me and then thought, was I magically transferred to the US or maybe Japan all at a sudden?  There are so many tourists talking in English or Japanese, that sometimes you have the feeling that you are no longer in Germany.

The Heidelberg Castle is the city's landmark, located on a hill overlooking the city. In 17th and 18th century it was demolished by war and fire. After long, heated discussions, it was decided that only the Friedrich Building would be fully restored while the rest of the castle would stay a ruin. It became one of the most famous ruins in Europe.

The castle can be reached by one of the city's furniculars.

Thank you very much Anne for this great card with the beautiful Christmas stamp and the memories it carries for me.
