The card shows the "Bastei", a rock formation that rises 305 meters above sea level, formed by water erosion over 1 million years ago. It has been a major tourist attraction for over 200 years and a wooden bridge was built to make access easier for the visitors in 1824. It was replaced by the current bridge, made from sandstone in 1851 and the views from there are just breathtaking.
The national park was established in September 1990, before the reunification of Germany, to protect the unique natural character of the area and it covers 93 square kilometers.
Thank you very much Kathrein for this beautiful card and stamps !!!
