Route 66 - Main Street of America

Originally Route 66 was one of the original highways in the US highway system with a total length of 2,448 miles passing through 8 states. Today it is often knicknamed Main Street of America or Mother Road. It was established on 11th November, 1926 and became the most important east-west connection of the country in the years between 1930 and 1960. Because of the ever growing number of vehicles, the single lane, often winding track was no longer sufficient and was replaced by bigger, more modern highways. It still continous to attract tourists from all over the world looking for adventure, nostalgia and magic that has inspired lots of films, songs and shows.

Thank you so much Sheri, for this beautiful addition to one of my favourite postcards collections !!!

Route 66 - Oklahoma destinations

Another of my main collections is the Route 66, the Mother Road of the United States. It is one of the original highways in the US Highway System.

The idea for Route 66 acutally started in Oklahoma. The citizens wanted to connect their state with those to the east and west. In the 1920ies existing roads were combined to one of the first highways. Originally it crossed 8 states and had a length of about 3,800 kilometers and has since become the most famous highway of the United States.

Thank you very much for this beautiful card, Christine !!!!

Mount Shuksan, Washington, USA

Mount Shuksan with Picture lake right in front of it, might well be the most photographed mountain in North Cascades National Park, Washington. The name of this glaciated massif derives from the Lumni language, meaning High Peak. The Lumni are a native American tribe in Western Washington State.
Thank you Sheri for sending this beautiful card !!!

Miami Beach, Ocean Drive, Florida, USA

This great postcard shows the famous art deco hotels on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, beautifully lit with neon lights. Right in the centre is Colony Hotel, which counts as the most photographed art deco hotel. Ocean drive is the centre of the Miami Art Deco district which has over 900 preserved buildings many of which you may have seen in tons of movies. At night the street becomes an El Dorado for people wanting to out, have fun and enjoy a good meal.
Thank you Denise  for this wonderful postcard !

Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, California, USA

Undoubtedly, Emeral Bay is the most beautiful place on Lake Tahoe, California. In 1969 the bay became a National Natural Landmark. The surrounding waters of Emerald Bay became part of the Emerald Bay State Park in 1994,  making it the first underwater park in the state, thus protecting the bay's bottom where wrecks and other items are to be found.
Thank you Linda for sending this beauty my way !!!

Salt Lake City, Assembly Hall and Temple, Utah, USA

This postcard shows two of the main buildings in Salt Lake City, capital of Utah, both owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. On the left, there is Assembly Hall, which has a seating capacity for 1,400 people. Construction began in 1877 and was finally completed in 1882. The building is designed in the then very popular Victorian Gothic style.
On the right you can see the spires of Salt Lake Temple. Construction of this massive building took about 40 years. It was dedicated in April 1893.
Thank you Judy Andreason for this beautiful postcard !

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

Dramatic view of the skyline of Salt Lake City against the snowy Wasatch Mountains.  Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the world headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormon Church. The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, trying to build up a place for the followers of the LDS belief who were persecuted all over the mid-west of the United States.
Eventually, the Pony Express and later the first transcontinenal railway led to economic growth and wealth and the city was henceforth nicknamed "Crossroads of the West".
Thank you Judy Andreason for this fantastic postcard !!!

The Kokopelli

The Kokopelli is a deity of several native North American tribes, symbolizing fertility. He presides over childbirth and agriculture. The Southwest Indians also associate him universally with prosperity as well as their physical and spiritual wellbeing. It can often be found in the petroglyphs and pictographs of the southwest.

Route 66 - Map and Collage

In 1932 U.S. Route 66 opened to connect Los Angeles and Chicago with a 2400 mile stretch of continuous highway. It was the first highway of such length to be paved from one end to the other. A rich history follows this mythic route, taking travelers through small towns and areas that are loaded with natural attractions.
Thank you Veeder for this beautiful card !!!

Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA

The Bonneville Salt Flats are located west of the Great Salt Lake, at the border between Utah and Nevada. It stretches over 100 square kilometers. It looks like a frozen lake, or a sea of snow, but it actually is a thick crust of salty soil. The area is completely barren, so that no life exists.
This beautiful postcard was sent by Jeannette Snyder O'Neil, thank you very much !!!!
