Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet, China (UNESCO)

This postcard shows Potala Palace, in Lhasa. Until the Tibetan Uprising in 1959, Potala Palace was the residence of the Dalai Lama. During the uprising the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India. Potala Palace has been turned into a museum and in 1994 it was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Construction began in 1645 under the 5th Dalai Lama on a 3,700 meter high mountain in the centre of Lhasa Valley
