The first lighthouse in this place was established in 1838, It is located at the north end of the New Basin Canal. The New Canal Lighthouse as can be seen dates back to 1890. It was badly damaged during hurricane Katrina 2005 and finally collapsed. It was replaced by a light on the pole and efforts are being made to restore the old lighthouse.
