Richard Wagner Festival, Bayreuth, Germany
This card showing the Bayreuth Festspielhaus was sent by myself when visiting the city. Wagner himself started the festivals, which should have taken place originally in Munich. But after a fallout with his patron, King Ludwig II he was expelled from Munich and found a new home in Bayreuth with the Margrave and his wife who was very interested in arts and music. The Margravial Opera House, now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site, prove to be inadequate though for Wagner's intentions, and a new festival house was built. It opened in 1876 with a performance of "Das Rheingold"
