Clan Names of Ireland



Great and rare postcard showing the Irish Clan Names sent to me by Claudia Busse for the Favourites Tag on Postcrossing. She found the card by chance in a small shop and hasn't been able to get it anywhere else, so I count myself lucky to own one of them :) Ireland was the first country in Europe to adopt hereditary surnames. O'Cleirigh (O'Clery), Irelands oldest, was fixed circa A.D. 916. The earliest recorded surnames elsewhere in Europe date back to the 11th century
